"Students in gas masks followed the Hey Day parade to the Irvine Auditorium & waited until Dr . Gaylord P . Harnwell , pres . of the U . of P . finished his [speech] (now seated in the front row on the stage with hands under his chin) then walked out . Speaking at the right is Gregg E . Springer , class of 1967 a chairman of the Hey Day exercises . The students in the gas masks about 40 strong were protesting chemical warfare contracts at Penn .
