Description
"The Academy of Music As It Looked in the Early Seventies -- The famous building at Broad and Locust sts . is outwardly unchanged except for the metal and glass canopy over the Broad st . pavement which for years has served as a protection for the opera and concert patrons . The Academy's present surroundings and the Broad st . of today are very different from those shown in the old photograph . In the seventies Broad st . was paved with cobble stones and had not entirely lost its 'Main Street ' savor of early days . The Academy was officially opened February 25 , 1857 , with a performance of 'Il Trovatore ' and was conceded to be the finest opera house in the country. "
