Cairo. February 15. 1873./
My dear Cary,/
I am now able to/
acknowledge your last welcome Letter/
of January 28th as well those of Jan: 10th & 14th/
& 7th and your goodness in giving me/
these great pleasures I feel the more/
when I know the pain you must put your/
poor eye to in writing them. I trust dear/
Willy & Emmy may be well free of their colds/
when this reaches you. Mr Reed, late Constructor/
of the Navy, starts for so rapid a journey to/
London that I have asked him to kindly/
post the packet when he gets there. I have had/
great pleasure in making that truly able man's/
acquaintance, as well as that of his friends Ld Clarence/
Paget & Mr Emmerson. Oddly enough, I heard/
of Emerson's (American Author's) arrival in/
Cairo yesterday & of his having expressed the pleasure/
of hearing that I also was here, mentioning some civilities/
we showed him when in London 20 years ago. I/
